Art Vistas Program
By Sue Scaletta
As a grandparent who has been closely involved in my grandchildren’s lives from the beginning, I have watched my grandson and granddaughter grow over the years. From being in attendance at each of their births through their current ages of seven and five respectively, they have been the most important addition to my life. While they were young the closeness and bonds we established were all encompassing. As the years slip by their lives have gotten busier with school and friends and "just life" in general. And although the love that we share is still just as strong as ever, the quality time that we get to spend together has lessened. Due to cutbacks in the school budgets that have occurred over the last several years, a program has been developed in our area called Art Vistas. Each classroom needs parents and grandparents to participate in presenting various art projects to the class. The volunteers interact and assist the children with their art projects. This year my grandson is in second grade and my granddaughter is in kindergarten. I took the opportunity to volunteer in both of their classrooms once a month for this art appreciation class. My daughter also volunteers in both classrooms and we get the chance to work together. As an added bonus that strengthens our relationship that has always been close and loving. This school volunteer program has been very rewarding to me because it has enabled me to be a part of my grandchildren’s lives in their daily school activities and I get first-hand knowledge of what their everyday lives are like. It is a great feeling to see the faces of my grandchildren light up when both their mother and I enter the classroom. The memories we are creating will last a lifetime.
